Green Bike Project expansion reaches crucial stage

Contract wins and construction progress

A project to expand the disability support service, Green Bike Project, has reached a crucial stage, but more funds are needed to complete it.

Genesis Orwell Mencap is extending its Green Bike Project, with Ipswich-based construction firm SEH French leading on the project to build a new workshop.

Companies involved have agreed to work on the project on a non-profit basis and include S&G Industrial Roofing, KLH Architects, Superstructures, tbf Scaffolding, Jarrolds, Ipswich Engineering, Brook Electrical and Plasufix.

A topping out ceremony was held on September 5 to mark the completion of the roof.

Rob Hart, Chief Executive of Genesis Orwell Mencap, said: “The progress has been phenomenal.

“SEH French, S&G Industrial Roofing and all the other companies involved have done a wonderful job of bringing it in on time and on budget.

“It’s been fantastic to see how well everyone engages with our services users, who are very excited to get into the new workshop.”

The Green Bike Project provides valuable work experience to adults with learning disabilities, who are taught how to repair bicycles which are then sold to prevent waste, encourage cycling, and support the charity’s work.

Progress on the project has been made possible by the support of companies involved and donations to the charity, but approximately £80,000 to £100,000 in additional funding is needed to complete the project.

Neil Pryke, Contracts Manager at SEH French, said: “This project is a great example of what can be achieved when a community comes together.

“The new workshop is looking brilliant and once complete it’ll help the charity support even more people.”

Sean Partridge is the Senior Director at S&G Industrial Roofing, said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic to work on site here. The service users are really friendly, the site staff are great and our team have enjoyed the job.”
