Work starts to expand disability support service in Ipswich
The start of works to expand Genesis Orwell Mencap’s support service in Ipswich has been marked with a groundbreaking ceremony.
The charity is extending its Green Bike Project workshop on Wright Road, with works being carried out by SEH French, KLH Architects and Superstructures.
The workshop provides valuable work experience to adults with learning disabilities, who are taught how to repair bicycles. The bikes are then sold to prevent waste, encourage cycling, and support the charity’s work.
A groundbreaking ceremony took place on 4th July with representatives from Genesis Orwell Mencap, SEH French, KLH Architects and Superstructures in attendance.
Rob Hart, Chief Executive of the charity, said: “The expansion will have a major impact on the number of individuals we can support.
“At the moment we can only cater for four service users per day, but with the new facility we will be able to cater for 10 a day – and there is demand for that, especially with the expansion of our schools alternative provision program.
“Every week we are getting more bikes donated and the new facility will allow us to repair even more, while teaching our service users valuable skills and independence.”
Genesis Orwell Mencap have raised £100,000 toward the non-profit project but are aiming to raise an additional £150,000 to complete it.
Last year, SEH French installed a ramp to improve accessibility to the workshop. This project, supported by SEH French’s supply chain, will provide a huge boost for the charity.
Stephen Brundell, Site Manager at SEH French, said: “It’s a privilege to offer our support to Genesis Orwell Mencap once again.
“They deliver incredibly important services to members of our community and we’re very proud to help give back.
“The larger workshop will allow them to provide valuable work experience to its service users, while also ensuring unwanted bikes do not end up in landfill.”
Simon Girling, Director of SEH French, has witnessed the benefits of the charity first hand as his auntie used their services at their previous site.
He added: “Genesis Orwell Mencap had a hugely positive impact on my auntie’s life. Now she’s no longer with us, it fills me with great pride to be able to support such a good cause.”
The first phase of works is underway, with additional phases to commence once additional funding has been secured.
